What to Expect at Your First Myofunctional Therapy Appointment

Starting something new can feel overwhelming—here’s how we make it simple and supportive from day one.

Whether you’ve been referred for an evaluation, heard about OroGlow through a friend, or just started Googling your way through mouth breathing and tongue ties—welcome.

Your first appointment is where everything begins, and it’s completely normal to feel unsure of what to expect. At OroGlow, we specialize in root-cause therapy that looks beyond symptoms to understand the full picture—so you can finally get answers that make sense.

Here’s exactly what to expect at your first myofunctional therapy visit.

It Starts with a Deep Dive (Not a Quick Fix)

This isn’t a rushed 10-minute consult. Your first session is all about understanding the why behind the symptoms you’re seeing—whether it’s sleep concerns, picky eating, speech challenges, chronic congestion, or jaw tension.

What we’ll go over:

  • Your (or your child’s) full health, feeding, and developmental history

  • Breathing patterns (nasal vs. mouth), tongue posture, and lip seal

  • Jaw function, chewing habits, and signs of oral muscle weakness

  • Any compensations the body has developed over time

  • Photos & videos to support assessment and track progress

This is the step where we connect the dots. You’ll probably hear, “That makes so much sense now,” at least once.

You'll Leave With a Plan—Not Just a List of Problems

Our goal is to give you clarity and a path forward. We’ll walk you through:

  • What we found during the evaluation

  • Whether we recommend a full myofunctional therapy program, a referral, or home support

  • Timeline expectations and how therapy fits into your lifestyle

  • What success looks like—and how we measure progress

You’ll get your questions answered without the medical jargon. We believe families deserve to feel empowered, not confused.

What to Bring (and What Not to Stress About)

This session is about getting to know you, so come as you are. No need to prepare anything extensive, but it’s helpful if you bring:

  • Previous assessments or reports (if you have them)

  • Notes on any behaviors you’ve been noticing (e.g. mouth breathing at night, picky eating, speech delays)

  • Snacks/drinks eaten in the home (and let us know of any allergies!)

  • Questions! This is a safe space to ask them al

You don’t need to have the “right” words. Just show up—and we’ll take it from there.
